Manual Tasks Risk Assessment Tool (ManTRA)

ManTRA (Manual Task Risk Assessment), conceptually based on the upper limb Strain Index, this assessment was originally devised as a measurement tool to be employed by Workplace Health and Safety Inspectors to screen manual handling tasks and assess the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Contact Alba Ergonomics for assistance with Manual Tasks Risk Assessments at your workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Manual Tasks Risk Assessment Tool (ManTRA) All About?

Why Ergonomists Use the Manual Tasks Risk Assessment Tool (ManTRA)

Manual Tasks Risk Assessment Tool (ManTRA) is a useful screening tool that requires no special equipment and gives a skilled ergonomist a quantifiable assessment of the postures and loads experienced, broken down into individual regions of the body. This assessment considers speed, duration, and repetition as a significant risk factor to a manual task. As professional ergonomists we can use this tool for most manual handling tasks, and it is especially useful to assess which region of the body are exposed the greatest risk of MSD’s and where control measures will be most effective at reducing this risk.

How We Use the Manual Tasks Risk Assessment Tool (ManTRA)

Using a 5-point scale we enter scores for five individual task characteristics (cycle time, force, speed, awkwardness, and vibration) for different body regions. The scores for duration and cycle time are then combined to give a rating for “repetition” risk. Score for force and speed are similarly combined to provide an “exertion” risk rating. Exertion and repetition ratings are then considered against the total time performing the task, awkwardness of the task and vibration experienced by the worker. The ManTRA tool then generates a “Cumulative Risk” score which gives an indication of the likelihood of MSDs for each region of the body and if controls are required.

Benefits of Manual Tasks Risk Assessment Tool (ManTRA)

ManTRA provides a cumulative risk score, an indicative “score,” specific to individual body regions, that helps assess whether a task is within acceptable safe limits or if further investigation, changes, or higher order controls are needed to reduce the risk of injury to the worker. It can also be used to assess and communicate the impact of any proposed recommendations by using a “before” and “after” score comparison.
